PIA Press Release

Ifugao employees association manages own brgy bagsakan center

by Vency D. Bulayungan

Lagawe, Ifugao (12 June) -- In a bid to help farmers' associations in the province market their produce, the Ifugao Public Servants Multi-purpose Cooperative (IPSMPC) launched here its own Barangay Bagsakan (BB) last June 10.

Dubbed as IPSMPC Barangay Bagsakan Center, this is will help market the products of various farmers organizations, 4-H clubs and Rural Improvement Clubs in the province at the provincial capitol. This is the fifth BB to be launched in the province.

Jose Manto Francisco, Chief of the Production Development and Marketing of the Department of Agriculture, Central Office said Center has been established for two concerns, the social concern and the sustainability.

"Social concern refers to setting up such BBs in depressed areas and selling locally produced products which are cheap, safe and fresh," Francisco said. However, in order to sustain the BBs, the people should patronize it, network to other BBs and install equipment.

Virgilio Marquez, the Manager of the IPSMPC said this is also one way of bringing the market closer to the employees where cheap but safe farm products such as organic products are sold. He said this is open from Monday to Friday so that employees will buy these products right at the doorstep of the Provincial Capitol.

Albert Indunan, the Executive Assistant of the Provincial Government congratulated the local Agriculture Office and the IPSMPC for this noble project which he said will stir up economy here. He also challenged the IPSMPC to make the BB a model to the other BBs and work for the betterment of the province.

The BB started in 2005 in Batasan Hills, Quezon City formerly called Barangay Food Terminal. The said BBs are part of the hunger mitigation program of the Arroyo Administration which aims to provide affordable food for the poor.

Meanwhile, Dr. Josie Aben from DA-CAR promoted the Gulayan sa Paaralan which will be established in schools to encourage pupils to eat vegetables. (PIA-Ifugao) [top]
