Carolina hails Filipino war veterans; Lim wants ‘Mausoleo de los Veteranos de la Revolucion' in Filipino
Manila (12 June) -- "Mabuhay ang mga Bayani ng himagsikan!"
So stressed defense undersecretary Ernesto G. Carolina, Jr. during a flag raising and wreath-laying ceremony at the ‘Mausoleo de los Veteranos de la Revolucion' at the Manila North Cemetary as part of the 111th Independence Day celebration today.
This year's celebration is themed, "Kagitingan, Kagalingan, at Kasipagan: Tungo sa tunay na Kalayan".
Usec Carolina, who was the guest of honor, said this is a day of thanks-giving to all our Filipino war veterans, pointing out that "ang ating kalayaan ay utang natin sa ating mga ninuno na nagbuwis ng dugo at buhay."
But he also stressed that Philippine independence is yet to be realized, saying "paano magiging ganap ang kalayaan kung may nagugutom, may pagkawatak-watak, at may mga makasarili?"
Thus, he urged everyone to join hands and help each other as led and assisted by various government agencies and representatives. "Panahon na upang magka-isa at magtulungan," he remarked.
For his part, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim said "parangalan natin ang mga Beterano" who he referred to as "mga Bayani na nakibaka, nanindigan at nagbuwis ng buhay."
He said, "Sila ang humango sa atin sa kuko ng mga nang-api sa atin – yung mga Espanyol".
During his speech, Mayor Lim took note of the mausoleum's name in Spanish as ‘Mausoleo de los Veteranos de la Revolucion', and suggested to the National Historical Institute (NHI) to re-write it in the national language. "Suggestion ko, isalin sa wikang pambansa. NHI, paki-palitan ang nakalagay kasi lumaban tayo sa mga Espanyol pero naka-espanyol parin ang mga salitang nakalagay diyan", he remarked. For saying this, Lim was applauded by the Filipino war veterans present.
The ceremony commenced at 7:40 a.m. and culminated at 8:22 a.m.
Among the VIPs present were Philippine Army (PA) Major Gen. Jojie Fojas, former Tourism secretary Gemma Cruz Araneta, Manila Councilor Lou Veloso, and members of various Filipino war Veterans organizations. (PIA-MMIO) [top]
