Pagadian City observes 111th Independence Day in simple rites

Pagadian City (June 12) -- The City of Pagadian commemorated today a very important milestones in the history of our nation - the 111th Independence Day in simple but fitting rites held infront of the Rizal Shrine, City Hall complex.

Hon. Rosario Uriarte, General Manager of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) was guest of honor, but unfortunately unable to graced the occasion due to health reasons. She was ably represented by Mr. William Medici, PCSO General Manager for Visayas and Mindanao.

Mr. Medici mentioned, the great contribution of Pagadian City to the cause of PCSO by of patronizing their programs and projects, and this is one of the reasons why the office is launching their charity caravan in the city in order to bring back to the people the services being offered by their agency especially for the poor and the needy by sponsoring a medical mission and giving out free medicines for the sick.

On the other hand, First Infantry (Tabak) Division Commander MGen. Romeo Lustestica in his message during the occasion gave emphasis on the three of the many things that we remain to seek independence and are being felt in this part of the region. These are social menaces particularly the proliferation of illegal drug, poverty and security problem.

Gen. Lustestica admitted, that the proliferation of illegal drugs is a big problem in this part of Mindanao. In fact the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC-IX) headed by Governor Aurora Cerilles has recognized that illegal drugs as a major concern of the peace and order council.

Although there are government agencies that are primarily in charge of addressing the drug problem such as the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) supported by the Armed Forces of the Philippines represented by the 1st Infantry Tabak Division, Lustestica said.

He emphasized that we should not lose sight of the fact that the families and homes have a great role to play so that our youth will not be in to drugs. He reminded all parents like him that the first line of defense of our children against drugs is the family.

The Commanding General said that a large number of our young generation who became drug users are products of broken families and unhappy homes. He urged all parents not be remiss of their responsibility of ensuring that their families and homes do not become producers of drug addicts.

Our quest for freedom from the drug problem is indeed a concern of the entire society. Let everyone in the community contribute his share to put to a stop this growing social menace. As concerned citizens, it is our duty to act positively against the proliferation of illegal drugs, Lustestica added.

The General also stressed, that security and development are both sides of the same coin. We cannot expect to have one without the other and the ultimate goal of national security is to provide a physically and psychologically secure conducive to national development.

Only in a condition of security can economic growth be sustained. The benefits of economic progress, on the other hand, can only be palpably felt by our grassroots communities when there is peace in our land, Gen. Lustestica concluded.

The program was attended by Zamboanga del Sur Gov. Aurora Cerilles, Pagadian City Mayor Samuel Co, Board Members John Regala and Babie Funtanilla, City Councilors Romeo Tan, Ben Culve and Ricardo Alajenio, MGen. Romeo Lustestica of the Tabak Division, Mr.William Medici, PCSO representative, Regional Directors, academe, men in uniform, civic groups, NGOs, government employees and other guests.
