Cebu City (12 June) -- After the flag raising ceremony in today's 111th Independence Day Celebration in Malacanan sa Sugbo, over a thousand government workers from the national government agencies joined their ranks in providing services to the public in one of the biggest malls in Cebu City.
Unlike in the past celebrations that started with a parade in major thoroughfares in the city, the government workers this year first had the flag ceremony led by Press Secretary Cerge Remonde together with Pres'l Assistant for Central Visayas Felix Guanzon, DOLE 7 OIC Reg'l Director Exequiel Sarcauga, and Dep. Omb. for the Visayas Pelagio Apostol followed by a mobile caravan to SM City in Cebu's North Reclamation Area for the simultaneous opening of a festival of various government services that would run till June 14 (Sunday).
DOLE 7 OIC Regional Director Exequiel Sarcauga disclosed that among the activities in place for the celebration are medical-dental mission (DOH, AFP, PCSO, and PAGCOR), livelihood fair (DA, DTI, DAR, DENR, DSWD, and NFA), job fair (DOLE, POEA, PEZA, CSC, and other government agencies), skills demonstration (TESDA, DOST, CSCST), housing cliniquing (HUDCC, Pag-IBIG, HLURB), and one-stop-shop (DFA, PRC, NSO, DOJ, NBI, SSS, COMELEC, PhilHealth) for clearances and other queries.
In his speech, Remonde commended the workers from the national government agencies for without them the goals President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo have set for her administration would not have been achieved.
He also said that while most are now enjoying the freedom that heroes fought in the past, those in government service must not hold their guards down as the country still faces an enemy of Philippine Independence which is poverty.
"While we have started to gain from the efforts of our Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who fought so hard to implement fiscal and economic reforms, we must still go on for we are still facing the external threats in the form of hunger, ignorance and lack of food," said the official.
With what government agencies offered in today's celebration, organizers hope to alleviate the Cebuanos' hunger for government services up close even for a moment. (PIA Cebu) [top]
