NVizcaya DENR distributes CLEEP funds, plants, trees for upland farmers
Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya (15 June) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources(DENR) here recently distributed livelihood funds and seedlings for upland farmers and people's organizations as part of the 111th celebration of the Philippine Independence Day Friday (June 12) within the former New Tribes Mission compound in barangay Calitlitan in this town.
The livelihood funds were sourced out from the national government's Comprehensive Livelihood Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP) being pushed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to invigorate economic activities in the countryside as a measure in cushioning the impact of the global economic recession in the country.
Some 1,123 upland farmers from various towns in the province received the fund through a Certificate of Livelihood Assistance.
Robert Apigo, provincial environment and natural resources officer said certificates, will enable the 973 farmers under the Upland Development Program (UDP) and 150 farmers under the Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) program to be employed and enhance their livelihood projects in their areas to uplift their economic status.
The farmers also received assorted seedlings from the government such as malunggay, jackfruit and mahogany trees to provide additional trees within their areas.
Apigo added that another 53 upland farmers will be given an initial amount of more than P74,000.00 out of the more than P1.3 million earmarked for their agro-forestry projects.
At least 128 persons will also be employed under the 'Bantay Gubat' program of the DENR to guard the province's forests covering 973 hectares in addition to the 28 forestry extension workers that the DENR will be needing.
