By Rizalie A. Calibo

Larena, Siquijor (June 15) -- The 111th Independence Day celebration here kicked off with a traditional flag raising ceremony spearheded by the local government unit of Larena, the Philippine National Police (PNP), Larena station and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) here.

A short program followed at the Queengate Center in Larena, Siquijor with national and local offices based in Larena, participate in the celebration where students, DepEd teachers and some barangay folks rendered presentations like folk songs, dances and speeches, all showing reverence to the Philippine National Flag and celebrating the country's independence.

Serving as the keynote speaker was the President of the Siquijor State College (SSC), Dr. Baldomero Martinez who said the that the theme "Kagitingan at Kasipagan Tungo sa Ganap na Kalayaan" is very fitting and timely when the country is experiencing its share of the global economic turndown.

Martinez shared some of his views for the country to attain real freedom. Among which, he suggested, are: change and reform in the allocation of IRA, that is giving more to poor towns and provinces; giving rights for foreign individuals to own property to generate investment, enterprise and jobs; and constitutional change, stressing the need to change the Presidential form of the government to Parliamentary.

All these, he said, allows the government to improve delivery of services, eventually, free the people from the bondage of povery and where true freedom comes in.

Also adding significance to the town's celebration is the medical mission sponsored by the Operation Blessing Philippines (OB of CBN Asia and facilitated by the LGU Larena. The medical missions caters all all barangays in Larena town in three differnt venues. (PIA) [top]
