PIA Press Release

Kalayaan 2009 beneficiaries reach 7,390 in Western Visayas

Iloilo City (16 June) -- The 111th Independence Day celebration here has brought the government's economic resiliency plan to 7,390 beneficiaries in Western Visayas in the amount of more than P14-million.

The distribution of employment contracts, scholarships and checks was led by Chief Presidential Legal Counsel and CLEEP Steward for Western Visayas Secretary Raul Gonzales Sr.

One of those awarded their employment contract is Charina Mendoza, 21 who finished her nursing course from Filamer Christian College in Roxas City and became a registered nurse in February 2009.

After which, Charina was just staying home because she cannot get employment from private hospitals especially since she is a fresh graduate. "It is very difficult to find a job in a hospital, even as volunteers, some hospitals cannot accommodate us anymore," Charina expressed with a sense of desperation.

With the employment contract awarded her, Charina is not just a certified nurse but is also now a certified NARS Nurses Assigned in Rural Service. "I thank President Gloria for this project because NARS will really help us nurses and I'm excited since this will be my first job," Charina added.

Presidential Assistant for Western Visayas Raul Banias revealed that at present 400 nurses are already hired for the NARS project and another batch will be hired in October.

Meanwhile, Gonzales who was also the speaker during the flag raising and wreath laying ceremony at the Plaza Libertad told the audience to reassess their thoughts on nationhood.

"Kung palangga naton ang aton pungsod, magsumpa kita sa aton flag nga ang maayo nga panimut-on amo ang aton itudlo sa mga kabataan, (If we love our nation, let us promise before the flag that we will teach the young the proper values)" Gonzales said in the dialect.

"We should redeem ourselves as we celebrate independence day today, and as we celebrate it year after year. We are the only ones who can help this nation as we are the beneficiaries of what is good and beautiful in our country. Therefore, let us resolve that this nation under one flag will flourish and remain as the shining star of freedom and democracy, in true Filipino nationhood so that together, you and I can help grow this nation from the valley of despair and rise it up to the promise land," Gonzales added.
