PIA Press Release

Nortehanons are up early to meet Pangulong Gloria

Tacloban City (June 16) -- People from all walks of life – young and old, working men and women, even school children woke up early on Tuesday to meet and get a glimpse of Pangulong Gloria.

From the Catarman Airport up to the towns going up to Catubig and Las Navas, school children with flaglets line up the highway all enthusiastic and eager to see Pangulong Gloria.

Indeed, it is not often, in fact while others claim that this is the first time that a President of the Republic, has visited Las Navas, others, say that former President Diosdado Macapagal was in Las Navas in 1963.

Mayor Arlito Tan confirmed that indeed, Pangulong Gloria’s father, the late former President Diosdado Macapagal was the first president to visit Las Navas. In fact, a picture in a tarpaulin installed at the site of the activities by the Catubig River, showed the former President with some of the leaders of Las Navas.

If this is the case, then President Gloria once again retreads the path of her great late father, just as she followed her father’s footsteps to become the President of the Republic.

As she inaugurates the Catubig-Las Navas Bridge today, President Arroyo is making history, one that will always be remembered by the people of Las Navas because for the first time, they are able to enjoy land transport, a signal of development. This makes people love her all the more.

The Las Navas Bridge is an important component of the government’s socio-economic development program for Samar Island. Student of Las Navas who are studying at Catubig need not board there as they are now able to go home everyday.

Las Navas Mayor Arlito Tan said the new bridge will provide safe, convenient and faster movement of the people, goods and services in Northern Samar, a resource-rich agricultural province like the two other Samar provinces – Eastern and Western.

"Without the bridge, access to Las Navas is only through the Catubig river by pumpboat. Kaya, napakalaking tulong sa aming bayan ang bagong tulay na ito (This bridge is indeed a big help to our municipality)," Tan said.

He said about 30,000 residents of 53 barangays in Las Navas, majority of whom are engaged in agricultural activities, will benefit from the construction of the new bridge.

Northern Samar Governor Raul Daza mentioned during the coordination meeting at the Capitol, this is the first official visit of President Gloria in the province.

The good Governor meant that this is the first time that President Gloria is in the province upon the invitation of the Provincial Government.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has been in various municipalities of Northern Samar. The latest was when she visited Silvino Lobos and Lope de Vega towns. (PIA 8) [top]
