PIA Press Release
2009/06/17

Significant drop in rebels' number noted

Iloilo City (17 June) -- From 7,170 in year 2006, the number of communist rebels has dropped significantly to 4,874 in 2009, disclosed a military data which also indicated a downtrend in the communist guerilla front organizations.

The Malacanang press report disclosed that a military data showed only 75 active communist guerilla organizations from its 100 organizations recorded in 2006.

President Arroyo said during a regional media interview that "we have a lot of success in our fight against insurgency," stressing that there is "more need to be done if we are going to remove this challenge which has plagued the government for many years".

The President also noted that the number of barangays affected by the communist rebellion has been reduced from 2,121 in 2006 to 1,378 in May 2009.

She called on the people to help the government's campaign to end the insurgency problem by 2010.

"We need to get rid of the insurgency problem so that tourists would not be scared to come here," said the president as she pointed out that peace helps bring investors to help propel the country's economy.

Maj. Gen. Arthur Tabaquero, head of the 8th Infantry Division based in Central Visayas said he is positive that the insurgency problem particularly in the region will be crushed before the term of the President ends next year, the Malacanang press report disclosed. (PIA6/TV) [top]
