RNET bares findings on Batanes nutri program implementation
Basco, Batanes (17 June) -- The municipality of Sabtang grabbed the green banner award this year; Uyugan the contender. This was bared by the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team(RNET) after it conducted recently an assessment in the province.
This year's evaluators are RNET chair Proserfina Reyno; Rhodora G. Maestre, NPCRO2, Gisela M. Lonzaga, NNC RO2 and Carol Jean Domingo, NNC RO2.
Significant findings for Sabtang are the following: involvement of all agencies and sectors in the nutria program; provincial and municipal resolutions support on nutrition program; presence of formulated problems tree of malnutrition reflecting actual situation among families with BNL; food production to address hunger and malnutrition, availability of 10,000 IU VAC for pregnant women; supervision of iron supplements to all target groups; private sectors funding support available in Sabtang and Uyugan; and no cases of above normal among children in Sabtang.
There are negative findings like low accomplishment on pre-natal visits due to illegitimate pregnancy, and large number of children in the family; low performance province-wide in the practice of exclusive breastfeeding.
Basco and Itbayat, two most populated municipalities have the highest prevalence of malnutrition in the province; wherein unemployment is an identified problem of parents of malnourished. Mahatao municipality has been exempted in the evaluation after achieving the CROWN award in 2008.
NEDA's latest survey in first quarter of 2009, revealed region 02 is one of only two (2) regions declared not poor in the country, having the lowest rate of malnutrition in the country; Batanes the 85th province re-MGO Goal I to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger results of performance; Nueva Vizcaya 73rd, Quirino 72nd, Cagayan 70th, and Isabela 62nd.
