Cagayan Blood Olympics slated on June 22-27
Tuguegarao City (17 June) -- In support to the annual World Blood Donor Day which falls in the month of June, the Northern Blood Services Zone will spearhead a six-day bloodletting activity at the Ground Floor, Parish Pastoral Center of Sts. Peter and Paul on June 22-27, 2009.
Dubbed as "Cagayan Blood Olympics", the 6-day affair which kicked off with a kalesacade last June 14, is aimed at promoting awareness and generate public support on voluntary blood donation and hopes to gather 450 bags of blood from voluntary blood donors.
Dr. Diosdado Jovian E. Domingo, Head of the NBSZ and overall chairman of the Cagayan Blood Olympics, said the donors are categorized into four, namely: Municipalities of Cagayan, Barangays of Tuguegarao City, and Government Agencies and Non-government institutions.
There will be a competition among the categories and corresponding points will be given, two (2) points for donation on scheduled dates and one (1) point for donation not on the scheduled dates. All blood donations will be deposited to the Blood Bank for future use of the participating barangays, municipalities, government and non-government institutions.
Each participating barangay, municipality, government and non-government institution is expected to send at least 30-50 donors.
The Cagayan Blood Olympics organizers are optimistic that they will be able to meet their target of 300-350 donors.
Domingo explained that the six-day activity focuses on the life-saving gift of voluntary blood donors whose motives are purely altruistic.
"We aim to encourage voluntary non-remunerated blood donation among the Cagayanos and make it a way of life for every Cagayano and every Filipino", Domingo stressed.
