Lugait welcomes national evaluators

Lugait, Misamis Oriental (18 June) -- The municipal government of Lugait, Misamis Oriental welcomed the national evaluators in the municipality to evaluate the Municipal Disaster Preparedness Program of Lugait.

Municipal Disaster Response Council was chosen as Region's 10 entry to the national search.

A consistent winner for the past years in the provincial and regional levels, the Municipal Preparedness Program of Lugait was organized during the 1999 flashflood.

Lugait Mayor Wellie G. Lim realized that a program must be undertaken to prepare for any calamitous situations that may come to the municipality.

Since its founding as a local government unit, the following disastrous events have so far been experienced in the municipality such as fire, fish kill, flashfloods, pest infestation, and insurgency by the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) underground movement.

Flashflood, so far, has made a major disastrous situation in the municipality damaging mostly properties such as the Public Market, roads and bridges. Killings, on the other hand, are of isolated case in Lugait.

Hence, Mayor Lim was prompted to undertake a program, "Lugait Ipatunhay ug Mahalon," believing that it is the only way to counter or minimize the impact of disasters.

The program includes the determination of hazardous areas, formulation of contingency plans on flashflood, establishment of the "Rescue Luga-hait," and purchase of equipment such as rescue vehicles. (Lugait Information Office) [top]
