PIA Press Release

DOLE Samar readies P.5M for summer jobs program

By Ninfa B Quirante

Catbalogan, Samar (June 18) -- More than P.5 M is being prepared for Samar's Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) popularly known as summer jobs.

The amount P 525,996.00 is only from the 40% DOLE share, whereas the sponsoring LGU or government agency shoulders 60%.

According to DOLE Samar, the amount is now being prepared and will soon be released depending on the documents that will be submitted.

Some 725 Samarnon youth have enrolled in the program and most sponsors are the LGUs.

In April, some 12 LGUs and two government schools pledged to sponsor some 490 students then, but as the program progressed, the number rose to 725.

The increase in the number of students showed how the government agencies wanted to help the students, albeit for only 20 days, said DOLE's Samar Chief Fe Estrella.

One such student who studies at the Samar State University (SSU) said the meager amount he earned amounting to P2,400.00 is already a big help for paying his school fees upon registration.

It was Hinabangan LGU that sponsored the most number of students at P120.00 per day.

The students were deployed in their own barangays to help their officials maintain the cleanliness of major thoroughfares. Others were assigned to help Barangay Health Workers, Purita Cabangangan, Hinabangan's Public Employment Service Officer (PESO) told PIA.

Two government schools, SSU and Samar State College of Agriculture and Forestry (SSCAF) had 20 and 10 students respectively.

Some students have already received their 60% stipend from their own chief executives.

The other 40% that will be shouldered by DOLE is now in the final stage of preparation based on information from DOLE-Samar. (PIA-Samar) [top]
