ULIGMAT Antiqueño vies for Gawad KALASAG Award

San Jose, Antique (19 June) -- ULIGMAT Antiqueño a rallying call for vigilance in times of disasters and calamities is vieying for Gawad KALASAG Award, a national search for excellence in disaster risk management and humanitarian assistance.

Gawad KALASAG Award is an annual search spearheaded by the Department of National Defense aimed to recognize outstanding performance of Local Disaster Coordinating Council (LDCC), private/volunteer organization, non-government organization and communities in implementing disaster risk management programs and in providing response/assistance to affected communities.

Broderick Train, PDCC Action Officer during the validation meeting said that Antique Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) bested other PDCCs in the Region because of its functional member agencies, supportive and competent leadership of the local officials headed by Governor Salvacion Z. Perez and the effective implementation of Uligmat (a local term which means vigilance) Antiqueño Disaster Management Program.

Aside from the PDCC, the Municipality of San Jose de Buenavista also vie for the national award as the best in Region 6 for the 1st to 3rd class municipality category. Barangay Pis-anan, Sibalom also compete for national award under the Barangay DCC - rural category. The town of Bugasong got second place in the regional search for 4th to 6th class towns.

For non-government and volunteer organizations, the Social Action Center of the Diocese of Antique also won regional award for NGO's humanitarian assistance category while 505 2nd Search and Rescue Auxiliary Squadron won under the volunteer organization category which made these groups qualify for the national search.

Rodney Berdin of Belison, Antique, also got the citation for his heroic deed in saving his family during typhoon Frank disaster. He qualified for national search for Heroic Act during Emergency Response and Rescue Operations.

Train the Action Officer of PDCC was also given special citation by Regional DCC in recognition for his support to other DCCs not only in Antique but also other regions in the country.

The team from central office has already visited the province and conducted validation of reports and documents.

Gawad KALASAG (KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan, SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan) promotes the Filipino inherent spirit of bayanihan, volunteerism and spontaneous cooperation in times of major problems like responding to disasters and emergencies. (PIA) [top]
