13 former NPA rebels receive cash assistance from OPAPP as seven ex NPA's now start life anew with own livelihood

Catbalogan, Samar (June 19) -- The Office of the Presidential Assistant on the Peace Process (OPAPP) once more gave out cash assistance for 13 ex NPAs at the office of the provincial social welfare and development (PSWDO) here in Catbalogan, yesterday.

Ms Nonita Cabangunay, Assistant Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer told PIA that OPAPP personnel known only as Felix and Allan brought the cash assistance of P20,000.00 each former rebel.

Apart from the simple giving out of ex NPA's some of whom reportedly came from as far as Basey and San Pablo Catbalogan, the OPAPP team also started monitoring the ex rebels awarded in March.More than a hundred ex rebels then were given cash assistance in the presence of 8th ID Commanding General Arthur Tabaquero, PNP Provincial Director Pancho Hubilla, Rep Sharee Ann Tan of the second district and Undersecretary Pedro Cesar Ramboanga of OPAPP.

The OPAPP team visited nine of them at Barangay Pagsaugan, Paranas, where they now reside peacefully busy with their new found livelihood.One such former rebel to be known only as Lani (not her real name) spent ten years in the movement, it was when the kids started coming in that she and husband decided to surrender.They were some of those given assistance in March.

Today, Lani and husband are into fishing, having a fish cage (AKA bunuan in Waray) of their own. The OPAPP team chanced upon the couple repairing their torn fish nets in the shore.Another peer, Cedes now 60 years old had a piggery which she now attend to with the help of her grandchildren.Still another male ex-NPA now is absorbed in his buy and sell of shrimps that OPAPP chanced upon him weighing some shrimps to be delivered to Samar's capital town.OPAPP has been going around the country distributing cash assistance to former rebels under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Social Integration Program (SIP).
