PIA Press Release

258 jobseekers find job on spot during 111th Independence Day jobs fair in Region 8

Tacloban City (June 19) -- "This Jobs Fair is great, it is as if I came to the Tacloban Convention to shop for a job and I got it on the spot," a 32 years old male law graduate who was hired on the spot as paralegal officer of the Department of Agrarian Reform, exclaimed.

The 111th Independence Day celebration in Region 8 turned out to be a lucky day for some 258 jobseekers who were hired on the spot in the mega jobs fair that highlighted the fete.

Also considered as lucky and blessed were about 3,464 applicants whose documents were received and referred for employment.

Department of Labor and Employment Region 8 Director Forter Puguon informed that of the 258 hired on the spot, 193 are for government jobs particularly 12 at the Department of Agriculture; 5 for the Department of Agrarian Reform; 3 for TESDA; 5 for National Maritime Polytechnic; 160 from DOLE and 8 for DENR.

Also hired on the spot are some 50 applicants for Smart Communications and 15 Overseas employment, specifically, three for Sta Cruz Recruitment Agency; 2 for SML; 7 for ALCARE; 1 for Good Day; and two for FVJ.

The first two applicants who were hired on the spot applied for the position of legal officers at DAR 8. The number of applicants hired on the spot for government jobs totaled 193 while those hired on the spot for local employment numbered 50.

Thousands of applicants from all over the Region visited the three-day Mega Jobs Fair which started on June 12 at the Tacloban City Astrodome. A total of 4,430 applicants for government jobs, local and overseas employment swarmed at the Jobs Fair, all eager to end their being jobless especially at this time when the world is facing an economic crisis.

As the applicants arrived at the Jobs Fair venue, they go to the shopping place and go through the list of 20,003 available jobs and then register at the counter. After that, they enter the astrodome and then go to the specific tables of the recruiters where they want to and are qualified to apply.

Considering the fact that the total available jobs numbered to 20,003 and the applicants were 4,430, one could conclude that there is still a mismatch between the education being offered and the needs of the employers.

More could have been hired or considered for the jobs if their qualifications met the requirements.

As it is, the applicants are thankful to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for initiating the mega jobs fair as the highlight of the 111th Anniversary of Philippine Independence. (PIA 8) [top]
