Gov declares mahogany as Abra's tree

by Maritess Beņas

Bangued, Abra (20 June) -- Governor Eustaquio P. Bersamin has declared the Mahogany as Abra's official provincial tree.

In support to this declaration, the specie had been planted to mark the celebration of two national occasions, the DENR Day celebration and the 111th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence.

Mahogany tree has been chosen not only for its beautiful characteristic but also for income that could be generated from this hard-wood specie.

The DENR Day was observed by the employees of the two Community Environment and Natural Resources offices in the province by planting 300 Mahogany tree seedlings at the Victoria Park, Casamata Hills, here.

On the same occasion, a film on climate change was shown to all the DENR staff and the Bantay Gubat Workers to make them realize the value of their response to the call of the nation for their services as forerunners in the stewardship and protection of our forests that is a vital measure to mitigate climate change.

On June 12, after the wreath-laying ceremony at the foot of the monument of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, at the Victoria Park, Governor Bersamin led the provincial employees, the officers and men of the 503rd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army based in Brgy. Tagodtod, Lagangi;ang, headed by Col. Essel Soriano, and the DENR people headed by Engr. Ernesto Aton in the tree planting along the Pidigan-San Isidro Road. More than 1,000 mahogany tree seedlings now line up the provincial road named St. Arnold Janssen Road.

In an interview with Aton, he said the DENR continues to propagate mahogany tree seedlings for distribution to Abrenios who are interested to participate in planting the said tree in their own private lots as well as for the continuing tree planting activities of the government as well as the schools to cover Abra's idle lands.
