1st TESDA-accredited LGU-run skills training center established in Cagayan

Tuguegarao City (22 June) -- Through the initiiative of Congressman Manuel Mamba and Technical Skills Development Authority Provincial Director, Belinda A. Labutong, the Itawes Skills Training Center in Naruangan, Tuao, Cagayan, considered as the first TESDA-Accredited Local Government Unit (LGU) run skills training center was established in this province.

The training center aims to cater to the skills development requirements of the constituents of the municipality of Tuao and the nearby municipalities of the 3rd district of Cagayan.

To provide quality skills training to prospective trainees, the center is equipped with the necessary facilities, equipment and supplies/materials based on the approved Training Regulations per qualification for the competency-based program delivery system.

For its pilot operation, three (3) programs or qualifications were launched this March-May 2009, namely: Household Services NC II; Food & Beverage Services NC II; and Housekeeping NC II. These qualifications were registered under the Unified TVET Program Registration and Accreditation System (UTPRAS) of TESDA and on the basis that these programs are responsive to the demands of the Tourism sector not only in the local but foreign labor market as well.

A total of fifty six (56) out of school youth and unemployed adults were trained under the first batch of free training at the said center. To complete the employment facilitation for the said beneficiaries, competency assessment was also conducted for them under the Free Assessment Service of TESDA by accredited competency assessors. Almost all the graduates of the three (3) programs were rated competent during the assessment.

The Center is managed and operated by the LGU of Tuao headed by Mayor William N. Mamba and supervised by its Center Administrator Mr. Romulo Serafica. The subsidy for the Center's operation is drawn from Congressman Mamba's Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) and a counterpart from LGU-Tuao Local Development Fund.

At present, additional programs like Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) NC II and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) NC II are proposed and developed by the Center to address the training requirements of the construction and metals & engineering sectors in the province. (PIA/TESDA Cagayan) [top]
