Storm-induced bus accident kills 1, injures 4 in Samar

Catbalogan, Samar (June 24) -- A vehicular accident claimed the life of a three-year old toddler (name withheld) in a vehicular accident at Barangay Pequit, Paranas, Samar as typhoon Feria was starting to batter the island.
Four other passengers sustained serious head injuries.
Yesterday, June 23, 2009, the moderately loaded El Palma bus was traversing the Taft –Wright Road Section bound for Manila when the accident took place.
According to PO2 Rolando Moralita of Arteche Municipal Police Force, the passengers attended their fiesta at Barangay Tangbo, Arteche and were returning to Manila.
One passenger who was not seriously injured said the driver was unable to control the bus as it negotiated the winding road in Barangay Pequit, Paranas, Samar.
So that the bus rammed to its left side causing severe injuries to the mentioned passengers.
Passengers Mercedes Rapis, 44; Lani Flores 30 and Igmedio Bayo 44 suffered head and body injuries.
Another passenger one named Merlinda Galinpapas had her right arm amputated.
All passengers were on board the ill fated bus bound for Manila.
Hospital Chief Dr. Rodulf Mabulay attended to the victims while Arteche Mayor Rolando Evardone was spotted at the Samar Provincial Hospital facilitating transport of injured passengers.
The injured passengers will be transported to Tacloban City.
The unidentified driver with his ill fated bus is now detained at the Paranas Police Headquarters. (PIA-Samar/with O Labro) [top]
