June 25 is Philippine Arbor Day

San Jose, Antique (24 June) -- June 25 of every year was declared as Philippine Arbor Day through Presidential Proclamation No. 396 by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo that enjoined the active participation of all government agencies, including government-owned and controlled corporations, private sector, schools, civil society groups and the citizenry in tree planting activity.

The mandate stressed the necessity to promote a healthier ecosystem for the people through the rehabilitation and regreening of the environment.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources will take charge of tree-planting in forest lands, the Department of Public Works and Highways along national roads, the Department of National Defense in military reservations, the Department of Tourism in ecotourism areas, and the local government units in their respective cities and towns.

In the past years, DENR PENRO Antique with other government and non government agencies have converged in a military reservation area for a tree-planting activity. The two hectare permanent tree plantation with a nursery component are sites identified and entered into MOA between the 79th IB 3ID PA on "Spearhead Greening Program" and DENR on the "Green Philippines Program last June 29, 2007. Other sites identified were: Five hectares in Sitio Venancio, Aningalan San Remigio Antique and Seven hectares Aningalan San Remigio,Antique, a total of 14 hectares Permanent Tree Plantation.

This greening efforts for environmental protection, enhancement and economic growth was the Philippine Army's counterpart dubbed as "Philippine Army's Greening Program" which had committed to maintain a reforestation program under its operative jurisdiction led by then Commanding Officer of the 79th IB based here in Camp Fullon.

On June 25, DENR Antique will once again lead the tree planting activity at Camp Fullon, San Jose, in Patnongon, Culasi and Hamtic. Everybody is likewise enjoined to be a part in the event as a commitment and a responsibility to take care of our habitat, the planet Earth which is is at risk due to global warming and climate change.
