DAR works to increase farmers' income in NorMin

by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (24 June) -- An average annual household income (AHHI) of Php107,585 have been noted in the Agrarian Reform Communities (ARC) of Northern Mindanao, as of March, 2009.

This was disclosed by Engr. Felix Aguhob, Regional Director of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) who said some Php74,342 or 69.10% of the AHHI is classified as farm income while Php12,042 or 11.19%, an off-farm income and Php21,201 or 19.71%, a non-farm income.

During a media forum held in the city, recently, Aguhob explained the theme of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP), now on its 21st year, which is "Strengthening ARC's, Creating Jobs, Empowering Farmers and Ensuring Food Security."

He said there is now a total of 162 ARC's in 623 barangays of 88 municipalities in the region, as of the first quarter of the year.

On the aspect of Land Acquisition and Distribution (LAD), however, DAR-10 has already covered 113,001 out of 120,289 hectares, the scope of CARP farmlands in the region, leaving a balance of 7,288 has. which have yet to be distributed.

As to LAD accomplishment by province, Lanao del Norte posted the highest number of hectares with 33,226 has., followed by South Bukidnon, 30,184 has., North Bukidnon, 26,987 has., Misamis Oriental, 13,150 has., Misamis Occidental, 7,130 has., and lowest in Camiguin with 2,324 has.

Meanwhile, Aguhob said, a total of 59,481Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARB) have availed of the CARP, as of the period with Lanao del Norte, again, posting the highest number of 15,121 ARB's, followed by North Bukidnon with 14,667, South Bukidnon, 11,970, Misamis Oriental, 8,513, Misamis Occidental, 5,996 and lowest in Camiguin with 3,214 ARB's.

On the other hand, Aguhob said he is happy of the five (5)-year extension of the CARP because this would give DAR ample time to finish their task of distributing the remaining balance of the CARP farmlands in the region.

Asked if DAR will be abolished after the 5-yr. CARP extension, the DAR-10 head said it is only the program which will end, but DAR will continue to give their support services to the ARC's in the region even after the CARP fades out. (PIA 10) [top]
