Southern Leyte PENRMO launches Champions of the Seas 2009

Maasin City, Southern Leyte (25 June) -- The provincial government through the leadership of Gov. Damian G. Mercado had launched the Champions of the Seas 2009 spearheaded by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Management Office (PENRMO), Coastal Fisheries and Resource Management Unit Head Eva Abad reported.

The Champions of the Seas 2009 was inspired by the local government units dynamism which adopted the improvement of management strategies in their municipal waters using the CFRM as a basic service to the coastal communities, it was learned.

The competition aims to further promote affective local governance of Municipalities/City of their coastal and fisheries resources and thereby attaining food sufficiency from the seas, economic development of coastal communities and sustainable development throughout the province.

The province's Champions of the Seas 2009 initiative is closely coordinated by the Coastal Resource Management network throughout Southern Leyte with the technical support of the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ)-EnRD based here.

The CRM network include Plan International, Federation of Omega Beneficiaries, Diocesan Social Action Center, College of Maasin, Coral Cay Conservation, Marine Laboratory of Visayas State University, Southern Leyte State University, among others.

The categories lined-up for the search include the Best MFO Ordinance Implementation; Best CFRM Plan Implementaion; Best Municipal/City Fisheries & Aquatic Resources Management Council (M/CFARMC); Best in Marine Protected Area/Fish Sanctuary; Best in Mangroove Protection & Management; Best Municupality/City Fishery Law Enforcement Team (Bantay Dagat) and the Champion of Champions of the Seas Award.

It was learned that the Panel of Judges for the search are Dr. Juan D. Albaladejo, D.V.M., Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Director based in Tacloban City; Dir. Ricardo T. Tomol, PAWCZMS DENR-8 Regional Director; and Dr. Humberto R. Montes, Ph.D. from the Marine Laboratory, Institute of Tropical Ecology in VSU, Baybay City.

Announcement of winners and awarding ceremony is scheduled on the 1st of July in time of the 49th anniversary of the province of Southern Leyte. (PIA-Soleyte) [top]
