PIA Press Release

PGMA orders release of P359-M for Cebu North Provincial Road expansion

Cebu City (25 June) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered the release of P359M to fund the planned expansion of the Tayud-Consolacion-Liloan road that connects to the ongoing construction of the Cansaga Bay Bridge, the major component of the Cebu North Coastal Road Project (CNCRP), a priority project of the President.

Public Works and Highways Usec. Rafael Yabut bared the President already gave instructions to release the amount to widen the existing provincial road from two to four lanes including the Suba Bridge which currently accommodates two lanes but this will be expanded to four lanes.

The Suba Bridge in the municipality of Liloan connects to the P2.3 B CNCRP of which the latter cuts through Mandaue City and transverse to the towns of Consolacion and Lilo-an cutting travel time to northern Cebu and decongesting traffic in the north provincial road, this is learned.

Yabut was in Cebu this morning together with Presidential Management Staff (PMS) Sec. Hermogenes Esperon to conduct an on-site inspection on two priority projects of the President as stated in her State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA) namely the CNCRP and the Cebu South Coastal Road Project in Cebu City.

"The money will soon be released and work will soon start for the proposed widening of the north provincial road," Yabut assured.

Yabut aired the assurance as Consolacion Municipal Mayor Avelino Gung-ob Sr. who was present during the inspection and briefing of the CNCRP in Barangay Pakna-an in Mandaue City expressed concerns that from the four-lane Cansaga Bridge crossing to Consolacion and Lilo-an may cause traffic in the narrowed north provincial road.

Yabut said work will soon start when the money is released and they will complete the expansion project by December, simultaneous with the substantial completion of the CNCRP.

The CNCRP is 55 percent complete while in September, contractors are aiming for a 95 percent completion in time for the deadline of the President to finish all SONA projects by yearend.

Pres. Arroyo mentioned the CNCRP in her 2007 SONA as a priority road project as it will serve as a gateway to the north of Cebu. The President led the groundbreaking of the north coastal road project in April 2007. (PIA-Cebu/FCR) [top]
