Davao City (27 June) -- The Department of Health in Region XI has strongly condemned the killing of Dr. Rogelio "Bong" Peņera last June 24. Peņera is the head of the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (RESU) assigned to monitor and check A(H1N1) flu in the region.
Peņera was shot dead by an unidentified assailant while driving his vehicle towards his house in barangay Cabantian, this city. His daughter who was with him during the incident was also wounded during the attack.
In a statement the DOH XI condemned the slaying saying that it was done cowardly, desperately and in a treacherous way since the victim known to be unarmed was shot several times while driving his vehicle, the detestable incident also almost endangered the life of Peņera's child who was passenger of the victim that time as they were on their way home.
The DOH-XI grieves over the untimely death of Dr. Peņera, the DOH-XI statement says.
The doctor's co-employees expressed that he was a good-natured worker, a helpful and approachable doctor and a diligent public health employee.
Peņera has been doing well in all his work assignments as epidemiologist and as member of the Health Emergency Response Team. His demise is a big loss to the office." DOH-XI Regional Director Teogenes Baluma said in a statement.
The regional office is earnestly requesting the police, the National Bureau of Investigation and other authorities to solve immediately this ruthless killing and bring the culprit to justice. (PIA XI) [top]
