PIA Press Release

Comelec Abra conducts off-site registration

by Maritess Beņas

Bangued, Abra (27 June) -- To step up registration of voters for the 2010 elections, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in the province has started going to the different barangays to conduct off-site registration of voters.

In a report made by Atty. Vanessa Roncal of Comelec during the meeting of the Multi-Sectoral Group for Clean, Honest, Orderly and Peaceful Elections (CHOPE) convened by Abra Bishop, Msgr. Leopoldo C. Jaucian last June 24, the Election Officers have been going around the different barangays in response to invitations of the barangay captains who are willing to help COMELEC in their mobilization since they have to bring with them all their equipment and paraphernalia for the registration.

The off-site registration being conducted by the COMELEC is just one of the steps that the Multi-Sectoral Group is taking up to determine the parameters of its action to really carry out its role in preparation for the 2010 elections to address the complexity of the political situation in the province.

The body also came up with a stand to address the perennial problem of violence like killings and harassments to include even the journalists in the locality since the local media people as well as institutions have become the target of harassment by unidentified armed men in the province.

Aside from the conduct of off-site registration of voters conducted by the COMELEC, the committee on Voters' Education of the multi-sectoral group is also going to the various colleges and schools in the province to conduct information education campaign and to solicit the support of the youth to participate in the conduct of CHOPE in 2010.

Meanwhile, the radio program "Turay ti Botante" had been going on air of the local radio here together with all other public service radio programs of the member-agencies in the multi-sectoral group to push its IEC program.

Before the conduct of the elections next year, members of the multi-sectoral group together with volunteers shall also undergo trainings on the use of the voting machines to be able to effectively carry out their monitoring activities. (PIA-Abra) [top]
