3rd quarter simultaneous earthquake drill in RP set on July 17

Tacloban City (June 27) -- The conduct of the 2009 third quarter nationwide simultaneous earthquake grill is scheduled on July 17, 2009 at 9:00 o'clock in the morning, National Disaster Coordinating Council Executive Officer Glenn J. Rabonza informed through a memorandum dated June 10, 2009.

This is pursuant to the pronouncement and instruction of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo after the 1st Nationwide Earthquake Drill on June 20, 2006 for earthquake drills to be conducted on a quarterly basis.

In the same pronouncement and instruction, President Arroyo also ordered to further expand the participation to government and private offices and establishments, until such time it is perfected and people's reaction during and after an earthquake become second nature to prevent casualties.

The ceremonial venue for the National level is in a public school in Caloocan City. For the various regions, the venue will be selected by the respective Regional Disaster Coordinating Councils.

All local government units, local disaster coordinating councils, government agencies, private and public schools are enjoined to conduct similar activities in their respective areas of responsibility, on July 17.

The objective of the quarterly earthquake drills is to make the public aware of what to do in case an earthquake occurs in order to prevent casualties.

Local government units, private and public school, government agencies and establishments may call on the Office of Civil Defense or the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council in their respective regions for assistance on the proper conduct of the Earthquake Drill.

The synchronized nationwide earthquake drill is a part of the effort to strengthen disaster risk reduction in the Philippines. (PIA 8) [top]
