PDEA cites Region 8 for non-inclusion of barangays in "category A" drug affectation
Tacloban City (June 27) -- There is no barangay in Eastern Visayas that is classified as Category A in terms of drug affectation, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in Region 8 reported during the recently conducted Regional Peace and Order Council in Region 8.
The PDEA Region 8 which is headed by Intelligence officer 4 Julius Navales informed that illegal drug problem is not alarming in Eastern Visayas.
Of the 4,490 barangays in Region 8 only 384 are drug affected barangays. Most of these barangays are classified as Category 2 and Category 3. No barangay is classified as Category 1.
The PDEA Region 8 chief said that Barangay Drug Affectation has three classifications. Category 1 means that the barangay is seriously affected. This is the result of the existence of at least one drug laboratory, warehouse, den, dive resort or similar establishments.
A barangay which is under Category 2 is a Moderately Affected barangay, with the existence at least one pusher or trafficker.
Meanwhile a barangay classified as Category 3 is a Slightly Affected barangay. This means that there is existence of drug users but there are no known pushers or traffickers.
Shabu is the number 1 drug of abuse during the period covering January 1 to May 31, 2009, PDEA 8 disclosed. During this period, PDEA recorded 41 incidents of seizures.
