DepEd starts Nutrition Month celebration ahead

Maasin City, Southern Leyte (30 June) -- A day before the start of the month-long nutrition celebration on July, the Department of Education's Health Division in the province launched the celebration this morning, June 30 with a motorcade around the city proper going to Barangay Amaparo, Macrohon where the activity was held.

DepEd Medical Officer IV Dr. Consolacion Ruflo who led the delegation disclosed that the highlight of the activity will be the feeding program of at least 160 pre-elementary and elementary pupils of Amparo Elementary School.

This year's theme is guided by the eheme as "Wastong nutrisyon kailangan, lifestyle diseases iwasan" in order to highlight the important role of proper nutrition in the prevention and control of diet-related lifestyle diseases.

Ruflo is her short message disclosed that some lifestyle diseases that should be avoided are hypertension, diabetes, cardiac problem, kidney problem, among others. "Eat a balance diet to avoid these diseases, less sugar, salt, avoid smoking and drinking alcohol and stress because this was proven as one of the causes of cancer in any part of the body," Ruflo revealed.

High malnutrition rate is one of he considerations why Amparo Elementary School was chosen, Ruflo reported while the area is also accessible to the school's division office, she added. A follow-up feeding program will be conducted after the children will be weighed by the health personnel in-charge and beneficiaries will be identified after.

On the other hand, Macrohon District Supervisor Fe B. Estafia emphasized that as parents it is our duty to give the right kind of nutrition to our kids. She quoted LIFE as the basic ingredient of all our activities, which means L love for health; I initiative; F- firmness in decision making and E for enthusiasm. "While there's life, there's hope," she said.

The launching activity was attended by the Public Health Nurses and Dentists from DepEd, some members of the Provincial Nutrition Technical Working Group, Ms. Estafia, the School Principal, teachers and parents of the pupils. (PIA-soleyte) [top]
