More lawyers interested in prosecution work

by Mai Gevera

Davao City (1 October) -- More and more qualified lawyers are biting the numerous vacancies in the National Prosecution Service.

Regional State Prosecutor Atty. Antonio Arellano said that unlike before, his office is now getting interested applicants to fill in the vacancies in all provinces of Region XI.

"We attribute such trend to the increase in allowance given to prosecutors as well as the recent 25 percent across the board salary increase to all government employees." he said.

The region now has a total of 64 existing prosecutors but still needs about 25 qualified employees. Arellano bared that in Davao City alone, it is expected that there will be no vacancy by October this year.

This shows the growing appreciation and interest of qualified lawyers opting public service over the lucrative private practice.

"This is one problem that was raised by the office and was later addressed through the increase of compensation," he said.

However, he admitted that the allowances given to prosecutors would rely mostly on the income of the office taken from the fees shouldered by the clients.

He also added that the increase in the number of prosecutors is needed especially that the office also provides services like the case build up assistance.

Arellano explains that in order to contribute development of a case, his office provides at least two prosecutors to assist an enforcement agency for its case build-up investigation.

Prosecutors who work for the case build-up are however not allowed to participate in the indictment procedure to avoid problems on due process requirement.

Meanwhile, all prosecutors all over Mindanao will be in Davao City today (October 1) for the First Prosecutors League of the Philippines Mindanao Area Conference.

Acting Secretary of Justice Agnes Devanadera will be around in the opening of the said conference. She will also hold a series of Working Dialogues with the National Prosecution Service of Region XI, the different DOJ Attached Agencies in Region XI, and with the RTC and MTC judges of Davao City.
