Teodoro orders pre-emptive evacuation at onset of Typhoon "Pepeng"

Tuguegarao City (2 October) -- Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro has ordered all local officials, disaster coordinating councils and regional line agencies to be on red alert and take appropriate actions including pre-emptive evacuation in the areas that might be heavily hit by typhoon 'Pepeng'.

Teodoro personally presided on the emergency meeting here to order all disaster action officers and members of all disaster coordinating councils to take pre-emptive evacuation of the residents in the low lying areas and landslide prone areas to higher grounds.

The representative of PAG-ASA has informed the public that Typhoon "Pepeng" might be declared super typhoon if it continues its strength with maximum sustained winds of 195 kph. He said the typhoon is expected to make landfall tomorrow in Aurora province and Isabela and on Sunday morning it will hit Laoag City.

With this, Teodoro said all officials must be on alert and coordinate with counterparts in other provinces to follow access most specially in the search, rescue and relief operations.

He further authorized PCS Roberto Damian, RDCC 2 chairman, to be allowed to get rice assistance from the National Food authority to be utilized in the relief operations. For DepEd, he ordered the school officials to immediately determine the need to suspend classes if it is needed most specially for those who will be hit by the typhoon.

AFP Chief of Staff Victor Ibrado, who accompanied Sec. Teodoro, also ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines to ensure that all units and equipments are available and already on standby mode. He also directed the commanders to make all search and rescue equipments and manpower prepositioned.

Meanwhile, Gen. Leopoldo Bataoil of PNP National Office and Gen. Glen Rabonza of the Office of the Civil Defense also accompanied Sec. Teodoro and Gen. Ibrado in conducting the emergency meeting here. After the meeting, Sec. Teodoro and company flew immediately to Ilocos Region to conduct the same meeting. (Oliver B./PIA 2) [top]
