DPWH KANAN project on track

by Joseph B Zambrano

Baguio City (2 October) -- The Department of Public Works and Highways-Cordillera Administrative Region (DPWH-CAR) said its implementation of the Comprehensive Livelihood and Employment Program's (CLEEP) Kalsada Natin Alagaan Natin (KANAN) is on track.

DPWH-CAR Regional Director Engr. Roy Manao said their office is employing 893 laborers a month on rotation scheme with daily wage of P231. These are assigned in the various districts in the region and are tasked to maintain the road side by doing vegetation control, clearing of canals and drainages, cleaning of roads and bridges.

Under the rotation scheme, a laborer will report for work every other month, meaning he is employed for six months in a year. This is to give chance for more job seekers to be employed, Manao said.

"We hire workers who are from the area where the project is being implemented to save on transportation expenses. This is government's way of helping them in their livelihood to ease their difficulty especially with the so-called global financial crisis," the Director explained.

The program has a total fund allocation of more than P60 million for the calendar year 2009.

Manao added that the KANAN program is also in keeping with the Accelerated Hunger Mitigation Program of the national government, which is implemented in the provinces of Abra, Kalinga and Mt. Province, which are identified as the poorest in the region. (PIA) [top]
