NSO completes survey on tobacco users

by Peter Balocnit

Tabuk, Kalinga (2 October) -- The National Statistics Office (NSO) completed a survey on tobacco users in the province under the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) that aims to establish benchmark data for government in tracking tobacco control interventions.

Maribel Dalayday, NSO Statistical Coordination Officer, said five sample barangays in the provinces of Kalinga and Apayao were surveyed Sucbot in Pinukpuk, Bugnay in Tinglayan and New Tanglag, Tabuk for Kalinga; Naguillian of Calanasan and Kapanikian of Pudtol in Apayao.

She said a total of 78 housing units were covered by the survey conducted by two statistical researchers and supervised by two NSO personnel.

With the use of handheld computers as tools for data collection, it allows NSO to take a big step into an IT-driven data collection process which can significantly reduce time for data processing, Dalayday said.

She explained that the conduct of the survey is in response to the urgent requirement for baseline data that will show the growing problem caused by smoking.

"This also seeks support from anti-tobacco laws, policies and or programs to prevent and address the adverse health effects of tobacco use in the country", she added.

Meanwhile, Dalayday informed that the NSO will conduct in October survey on labor force (LFS), overseas Filipinos, household survey on domestic visitors. The LFS is conducted regularly every quarter, while the survey on domestic visitors is its second time, the first one done in 2006.

Dalayday said hired researchers and NSO employees are at present on a second level training at Baguio City.

She also informed that NSO celebrates this October the 20th National Statistics Month with the theme: Enhancing Security Sector Statistic for Good Governance, Peace and Sustainable Development.

Part of the celebration she said will be the conduct of data dissemination to schools and information dissemination to the public on NSO products, civil registration and other services. (PIA-Kalinga) [top]
