Scientists called on to present outputs, nominations to various awards

Bangued, Abra (3 October) -- The National Academy on Science and Technology (NAST) is calling on all scientists to present their research outputs particularly on science and technology as well as nominations to various awards in celebration of the National Science and Technology Week.
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) provincial director Menandro Buenafe, said the nominations for outstanding achievements in science and technology come in eight categories.
These are the Outstanding Young Scientist (OYS), the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Prize for Young Scientists in the Philippines, the NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists, the Outstanding Scientific Paper, the Outstanding Book and/or Monograph, the PRO Scientia Transformatrix Award, the NAST-HUGH Greenwood Environmental Science Award, and the NAST-LELEDFI Award for Outstanding Research in Tropical Medicine.
All the categories of awards are given to young scientists who have outstanding achievements in the promotion of science and technology particularly in the fields of Agricultural Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemical, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences, Engneering Sciences and technology, Health sciences, and Social Sciences.
All papers to be presented must have been published in scientific and technical journals within the five years preceding the award.
The NAST-Hug Greenwood Environmental Science Award is concerned with environmental protection and conservation to respond to the rapid pace of environmental degradation and the eventual depletion of natural resources. While the NAST-Leledfi Award is given to individuals or groups whose research work contribute to the advancement of the country's knowledge and practice in Tropical medicine.
The Outstanding Awards, on the other hand, are in three categories: The Outstanding Technology Commercialization Award (or Gregorio Zara Medal), the Outstanding Research and Development Award (Eduardo Quisumbing & Julian Banzon Medal), and the Outstanding Science Administrator Award (Dioscoro Umali Medal).
The Zara Medal is given in recognition of the efforts of technology generators and developers whose technologies have been commercialized. Only one award is given each year.
The Quisumbing and Banzon Medal is given to individual/group who have made outstanding contributions through research. There are two types of awards under this category: the Basic Research and Applied Research awards.
The Umali Medal is given in recognition of Science & Technology (S&T) or Research and Development (R&D) administrators who have made significant contributions to science and technology and implementation of plans and programs. The S&T or R&D administrator may come from the academe, private sector or government.
Nominations are accepted on or before November 2009. Nomination forms are available at the NAST Secretariat and can be obtained at website www.nast.ph or through the DOST Offices. (PIA-Abra) [top]
