Fongwan orders smallscale miners to temporarily stop operations with onset of typhoon "Pepeng"

by SC Aro

La Trinidad, Benguet (3 October) -- The Office of the Provincial Governor issued an order suspending small scale mining operations and activities in their respective areas until such time that good weather allows them to.

Governor Nestor Fongwan issued the unnumbered memorandum on October 2, 2009 during an emergency meeting of the PDCC held at the Ben Palispis Auditorium attended by provincial employees, municipal officials, concerned line agencies and other groups.

This is to avoid any untoward incidents which may occur brought about by weather disturbances like typhoon "Pepeng."

The order states that all small scale miners are ordered not to enter their tunnels or adits during the period of suspension and or until further Advisory of Resumption shall have been issued.

Presidents/chairs and leaders of small scale mining associations are also advised to promptly disseminate the order and supervise its strict compliance.

Moreover, the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) was activated last Friday in preparation for typhoon "Pepeng".

Among the issues discussed during the emergency meeting were the assessment of resources and equipment of municipal local government units, district hospitals including the Benguet General Hospital and other vital offices will be on standby for use during the operations.

Fongwan also directed the Department of Education Benguet Division to open elementary schools as evacuation centers. He also called on barangay officials and others concerned for the use of barangay halls and day care centers as evacuation centers. (PIA-Benguet) [top]
