Eastern Samar DTI appeals for businessmen's sobriety, public's calmness

Borongan City (5 October) -- There is no reason to panic.
Thus said Ms. Tonette Candido, Chief, Consumers Welfare Division of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) here as he appealed to local dealers of consumers' goods.
Candido's public service announcement over Radyo ng Bayan DYES on Saturday, October 3 resounded as her reaction to the several text messages her office had been receiving on alleged overpricing and hoarding as an aftermath of typhoon "Ondoy" which severely damaged Metro Manila.
"It is true that Eastern Samar was not directly affected by the typhoon, but it being an importing province, Ondoy will have some repercussions in the local supply and demand of goods. This is perhaps why some local dealers are going ahead in their profiteering initiatives as texted to me by some consumers and monitoring officials," Candido said.
"Along this, we wish to remind the public, especially the businessmen, that during State of Calamity, RA 7581, or the Price Control Act is being enforced, that is, DTI together with the Department of Agriculture (DA) see to it that overpricing of some sort would not be committed by any store owner.
Further, the Price Watcher announced that her team is set to visit stores in the towns and appealed to store owners for their cooperation when they come to gather information about their available stocks, how they are transported and too, to help them approximate the public's consumption of goods. This way, Candido said, "we can allay shortage of basic family items".
"Besides, the public has no cause to panic," Tonette added.
According to her, moneyed people should not keep on buying to fill their stock rooms and cabinets, instead, she asked that in times of needs as in natural calamities, the rich and poor should help one another. She added that it is expected that dealers have the inventory level of their items which is good for three months. So that, there is no reason to panic. (PIA-Eastern Samar) (PIA) [top]
