First batch of eSkwela scholars in Tanauan ready to take DepEd's October 11 A&E test

Tacloban City (October 5) -- Almost 40 eSkwela scholars in Tanauan, Leyte are now ready to take the Accreditation and Equivalency test which is scheduled on October 11.

Around 60 out of school youth who also attended the DepEd's Alternative Learning System training make the number of OSYs in Tanauan who will take the test to more or less 100.

This was learned from Mayor Roque Tiu who was at the eSkwela on Saturday, observing the review of the eSkwela scholars who are already qualified to take the A&E test on October 11.

Mayor Tiu said he is as excited as the scholars themselves because the Tanauan eSkwela, is a milestone in the Alternative Learning Sytem in Tanauan being the first municipality to set up such program.

He added that the eSkwela provides a second chance for out-of-school youth to finish their high school education without going to school for several years but through the study modules using the computer.

If and when the students are able to pass the test, they will be awarded with high school diploma that will enable them to enroll in college in the next enrolment.

Mayor Tiu, however, said that for those who would want to enroll in advance IT, the LGU is willing to take them in as scholars.

The A&E Test is a multiple-choice, paper-and-pencil test that is designed to measure the competencies of those who have not finished formal elementary or secondary education.

The Department of Education offer this annually to all out of school youth so that they can become productive members of society even without having to attend formal school.

Targets of the A&E Test include elementary and high school drop outs who are at least 11 years old, and 15 years old, respectively, on or before October 11, 2009. Industry-based workers, housewives, drivers, and maids are also welcomed to take the test.

Those who pass the test are given a diploma certified by the DepEd Secretary himself. This certifies that their competencies, as revealed in their exam results, are at par with high school graduates from the formal school system.

This test gives a chance to both in- and out-of school youth to pursue college. Passers, like those schooled in the formal system, are even eligible for government positions.

Interested examinees may contact the Alternative Learning System coordinator or any school authorities in their areas. Late examinees may register on the day of the test from 8:00 o'clock in the morning up to 5:00 o'clock in the afternoon. They are advised to bring any identification card, and two size 1x1 photos.
