RP under state of national calamity, automatic price control set
Manila (5 October) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared over the weekend the Philippines under State of National Calamity.
The President made the declaration during the National Disaster Coordinating Council meeting.
A state of national calamity gives local government units (LGUs) access to their calamity funds, protects consumers from price manipulators, speeds up the rehabilitation of areas devastated by typhoon "Ondoy, and provides immediate assistance to those still to be hit by super storm "Pepeng.
Based on the said proclamation, the Department of Trade and Industry in Negros Occidental in a press statement also declared price freeze of basic necessities at prevailing prices and under automatic price control with price ceiling set by the industry.
As per instruction of Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila, the DTI will coordinate closely with the Philippine National Police and the local government units to enforce price controls at the local levels.
In Bacolod City, heeding the call for price control and monitoring, Mayor Evelio Leonardia is set to convene the Local Price Monitoring and Coordinating Council to discuss Proclamation No. 1898 from the Office of the President, declaring a State of National Calamity.
The Mayor will meet with the members of the Local Price Monitoring and Coordinating Council and representatives of government agencies: Dept. of Agriculture, Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Health, Dept. of Transportation and Communications, Dept. of Justice and the National Economic and Development Authority and 1 representative from the public sector, consumer sector, agricultural producers, trading sector, manufacturing sector, retail sector and labor sector.
