Cagayan de Oro City (5 October) -- October 9 is the new deadline for the filing of application for the DOST College Scholarship.

This is according to Officer-in-Charge Jacinto Taran Sr. of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in region 10.

The new development came about as a result of the devastation caused by the tropical storm Ondoy in Metro Manila and nearby Luzon provinces.

High school graduating students, or those high school graduates who wish to apply for the scholarship are encouraged to visit the nearest DOST regional office or provincial centers.

Qualified to apply for the scholarship are those who belong to the upper five percent of the graduating class, who are not more than 21 years old, of good health, of good moral character, and have no pending application to migrate to any country abroad.

Applicants should submit the following requirements: filled up application form duly signed by concerned persons (built-in in the form); Form 138 or report card; birth certificate; electric bills for June, July, and August 2009; two pieces 1x1 recent, colored ID pictures; and 2008 Income Tax Returns of parents.

Applicants whose parents' gross, combined income for 2008 does not exceed 156,000 pesos can submit a certification from the BIR office that their parents are exempted from filing the income tax return.

The examination date of the scholarship is on November 15, 2009.

Those who will pass the DOST college scholarship will enjoy the following privileges: free tuition fees; monthly allowance of as much as 4,000 pesos; book allowance; Physical Education (PE) / military uniform allowance; transportation allowance; and group insurance.

The DOST college scholarship is part of the government's move to increase the pool of scientists and engineers which the Philippines needs.
