Typhoon 'Pepeng' leaves 1 dead; severe damages in agricultural production in Region I

San Fernando City, La Union (5 October) -- As of 9:30 am this morning, the Office of Civil Defense Regional Center No. 1 reported 3 casualties caused by typhoon 'Pepeng', a 13 year-old boy named Amadeo De Vera was reported drowned in Nalsian, Calasiao, Pangasinan; a certain Kyle Jose, 10 year old girl from Esperanza, Vintar, Ilocos Norte was swept by big wave; and a 36-year old woman named Lourdes Tumpalan from San Vicente, Sarrat, Ilocos Norte suffered from head injury.

Reports of totally damaged houses in Ilocos Norte is 32, partially damaged is 94; In La Union 1 damaged house was seen in Aringay; and in Ilocos Sur, 1 partially damaged house located in Narvacan.

Status of evacuation as of this writing, in La Union, there were 508 persons or 135 families who were evacuated in 5 evacuation centers 3 in Bauang and 2 in San Fernando; in Pangasinan, 1,597 persons or 381 families evacuated in 19 evacuation centers 1 in Lingayen, 15 in Dagupan, 1 in Bolinao, 1 in Sual and 1 in San Nicolas; in Ilocos Norte, a total of 1,074 persons or 253 families evacuated in 9 evacuation centers 1 in Bacarra, 5 in Laoag City, 2 in Bangui, and 1 in Banna; and in the province of Ilocos Sur, 4,370 persons or 1,096 families evacuated to 11 evacuation centers 1 in Santa, 1 in Santa Cruz, 3 in Magsingal, and 6 in Vigan.

A severe damaged in Agricultural production like rice, Banana, Corn, assorted vegetables, fruit trees and Mango brought about by the strong winds caused by typhoon 'Pepeng' is recorded. A total of 2,200 hectares of rice plantation was reported damaged in Ilocos Norte; In Ilocos Sur with 4,000 hectares of rice, 50 hectares of Banana, and 50 hectares of assorted vegetable plantation; In La Union 13,054 hectares of supposedly soon to be harvest rice, 26 hectares of Corn, 31 hectares of vegetables, and 37 hectares of fruit trees; in Pangasinan with 650 hectares of rice plantation, 3 hectares of corn, 2,000 trees of mango and 1 hectare of assorted vegetables.

A total of 16 barangays were affected by 'Pepeng' in La Union with 302 families or 1,238 persons; in Pangasinan, 37 barangays with 1, 709 families or 8, 354 persons; in Ilocos Norte, 178 barangays, 11,686 families or 50,639 persons; in Ilocos Sur, 25 barangays, 1,449 families or 6,099 persons.

Relief and recovery operations is still ongoing, assistance extended to the provinces coming from Department of Social Welfare and Development Regional Office 1 amounted to P100,711.50; from the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office / Provincial Government P2,024.15; from the Local Government / Municipality P53,321.86; from the Philippine National Red Cross P8,040.00. Over-all total of relief and recovery operations extended amounted to P164,097.51.

As of this morning, better weather condition is now felt in the four provinces of the region; La Union is cloudy; Pangasinan is partly cloudy; Ilocos Sur is cloudy with light rains; Ilocos Norte is having an intermittent light rains or changeable weather condition. (PIA-RO-LU) [top]
