PIA Press Release

4PS assists 7,608 beneficiaries in Nueva Ecija

Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija (5 October) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo distributed 20 more cash cards to impoverished families here Sunday under the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), a flagship project of the administration to break the intergenerational poverty cycle through investments in human capital.

The 20 new recipients complete the 2,034 total 4Ps beneficiaries here in Gabaldon. Nueva Ecija has a total of 7,608 4Ps beneficiaries. Aside from Gabaldon, the other beneficiaries came from Carrangalan (2,439), Licab (1,706) and Talugtug (1,451).

During the ceremony, President Arroyo stressed that receiving cash grants under the program requires certain conditions such as: parents must ensure their children attend school and receive vaccinations and health care; pregnant women must receive pre and post natal care and be attended during childbirth by a skilled health professional; parents must attend responsible parenthood seminars, mother's classes, and parent effectiveness seminars.

The President, who was with Social Welfare and Development Secretary Esperanza Cabral launched the Damayang Apat na Piso, a developmental initiative of the 4Ps beneficiaries from the 16 barangays of Gabaldon who decided to have a savings out of the grants provided by the program.

The new project will serve as a mechanism to immediately respond to cases of individuals and families of the 4Ps beneficiaries who are in crisis situation and in undertaking economic activities that will prepare them in assuming the responsibility for the health and educational needs of children and in improving the general socio-economic condition of the family.

As part of the program, the Chief Executive also spearheaded the ceremonial distribution of Proud Batang 4Ps Ako! Buttons to 20 children.

The use of button pins is an active approach of the government in promoting students' understanding about 4Ps. It also reminds the students about their responsibilities as beneficiaries of 4Ps and as part of their compliance that will be tantamount to their best interest and success of the program.

According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), total releases of cash grants for 4Ps beneficiaries in Nueva Ecija from August 2008 to May 2009 amounts to P50,916,500.00. (OPS) [top]
