PIA Press Release

LMP Leyte responds to PGMA's call to help Ondoy victims

Tacloban City (October 6) -- The League of Municipalities of the Philippines Leyte Chapter has donated 300 mats to the typhoon victims of Marikina, Tanauan Mayor Roque A. Tiu, the chapter president, informed.

Mayor Tiu intimated that this move is in answer to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's call at the height of the disaster appealing for help and support for the flood victims.

In this time of disaster, solidarity and united action is needed. The needs of the people comes before any bickering and finger pointing, Mayor Tiu said.

Mayor Tiu said that the mats have been sent without any freight charges, on October 5, 2009, courtesy of the Philippine Airlines, the country's official carrier.

The LMP Leyte President said that the consensus to donate to Marikina was reached through texting. The Mayors are so busy it is difficult to arrange a meeting date where everyone is able to attend, that is why the latest technology in communication was used.

In the past, Leyte towns were the recipients of donations because of calamities. The mayors are unanimous that this time, it is their turn to send donations no matter how small.

It is one way of showing Leyte's concern for the suffering victims in Metro Manila, Mayor Tiu said.

On September 28, after watching the unraveling of the damage done by tropical storm Ondoy on September 26, the local government of Tanauan immediately allocated about P50,000. to donate to the Ondoy victims in Marikina. The amount was used to buy locally made mats from the local producers.

Mayor Tiu said that "love for other people" surfaces during times of calamities and disasters. The local producers themselves decided to give discounts as their help to the victims.

This move is indeed very touching, Mayor Tiu said, considering that a family size banig is a two-day work.

Mayor Tiu added that he has encouraged the other mayors in the province to also come up with donations to the typhoon victims to show their unity and care.

This is largely the LMP Leyte's answer to the call of President Gloria Arroyo's call for help for the victims of Ondoy, Mayor Tiu concluded.

The League of Municipalities of the Philippines has also launched a nationwide program for the municipalities to help the Ondoy victims. (PIA 8) [top]
