Chess tourney set October 10-11 in Lingayen

Dagupan City (06 October) -- The provincial government has invited all chess enthusiasts to participate in the 1st Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. Cup: Open Rapid Chess Championship on October 10-11 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) in Lingayen.

The event, sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), will be officiated by the National Association of the Philippines Chess Arbiters (NAPCA).

Sports coordinator Modesto Operaņa said that Espino has encouraged all Pangasinenses especially the youth, to engage in sports of their interest or choice as an alternative recreation.

"Sports development is among the top ten thrusts of the governor and since he assumed his post in July 2007, he has worked double time in catching up with the basic needs of Pangasinense athletes such as the renovation of the NRSCC and through launching of various sports competitions such as this," he said.

Operaņa added that the governor envisions Pangasinan as a "haven of world-class chess players." The event, he said, would unify all chess aficionados in the province.

Big prizes await the winners. (PIO/PIA Pangasinan) [top]
