President Arroyo to lead Estancia water project groundbreak

Estancia, Iloilo (6 September) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will lead the groundbreaking of the expansion project of Estancia Water District (EWD), October 7 at Barangay Pa-on in this major commercial fishing center.

The Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) headed by Administrator Prospero Pichay, Jr. is providing a P30-million financial assistance for the project that will enable the water district to improve its facilities and expand its service capability.

President Arroyo will arrive here from Molo, Iloilo City where she attended a holy mass at the Molo Church which is part of the canonization process for Mother Rosario Arroyo de la Visitacion, foundress of the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary in Molo.

Mother Rosario is the great grandaunt of First Gentleman Mike Arroyo.

The expansion project of Estancia Water District includes the drilling of additional wells, provision of electro-mechanical and chlorination equipment, installation of new transmission and distribution pipes including valves and hydrants, construction of a new reservoir, provision of power line extension and standby equipment, and installation of service connections.

EWD General Manager Engr. Rodney Agregado said the water district presently serves about 600 consumers in five barangays of the town's poblacion.

Estancia mayor Restituto Mosqueda said the project will be very beneficial to his constituents as it will bring about a more efficient service by the water district.

The project jives with the thrust of President Arroyo to enable Filipinos to have access to safe potable water under her Ten-Point Agenda.

Estancia town, situated 135 kilometers from Iloilo City, is dubbed as the Alaska of the Philippines owing to its abundant marine resources as part of the fish-rich Visayan Sea Triangle.

October 7 also marks the religious and municipal fiesta of Estancia in honor of its Patronness the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary. The water district was founded on October 9, 1987. (PIA-6/JSC/AAL) [top]
