DA 12 installs 8 corn storage facilities

Koronadal City (6 September) -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) 12 Corn Program and selected Local Government Units and the National Agribusiness Corporation (NABCOR) has installed eight (8) corn storage facilities in the region.

In a report, DA 12 said the facilities known as Hermetic Cocoon are installed in the region's existing Post Harvest Processing and Trading Center located in Malungon, Sarangani Province; Banga,South Cotabato and in Kabacan, Cotabato.

These facilities accordingly will respond to the need for storage facilities for corn as inventory of corn grains increase due to the present low market price.

NABCOR Operations Manager for Mindanao Mario Apurada said the cocoons were installed in the region is a technology from Israel, which has a capacity to store 100 metric tons of corn grains. The storage of corn grain will last from eight months to one year.

According to Raul Rebollos II, GrainPro Philippines Incorporated Field Service Manager, the cocoon was proven and tested safe for storage and fumigation of bagged grain without the use of toxic chemicals, organic storage system, quality prevention of dry agricultural commodities short or long term food storage without the use of pesticides, insects free and eliminate losses. It is movable and can be used by farmers in the field.

Plant Manager Mr. Gabriel-Rie Rivera said, as of August 25 this year the processing center in Malungon has 1.4 million kilos or 1,400 metric tons of corn grain stock, while in Banga, 830 metric tons of corn grain are being stored according Plant Manager Arnett Gancia.
