PIA Press Release

Feature: OMIF goes to Zamboanga

By Lowell Vallecer

Zamboanga City (7 September) -- This year, it will be Zamboanga City's turn to host the OTOP Mindanao Island Fair (OMIF).

Hermie Cuevas, Chief of the Business Development Division of DTI in Region 9 disclosed that this will be the fourth year of the OMIF following its successful conduct in the cities of General Santos and Cagayan de Oro in the previous years.

First conducted in General Santos in 2006, Yamang Mindanao Trade Exhibit as the OMIF was first known, was very successful that a repeat of the said marketing event was conducted the following year. The fair generated more than P30 million in sales and attracted more than 30 institutional buyers from Europe, USA, Indonesia, Malaysia and Australia, aside from the buyers in Cebu, Davao and Manila.

Last year, Cagayan de Oro City hosted another hugely successful OMIF dubbed as "Kahimunan" Mindanao Island Fair at the atrium of the city's Limketkai Center. The 123 exhibitors from all over Mindanao generated a combined sales of P33.2 million.

This year, the OMIF in Zamboanga will bear the title "Orgullo de Mindanao 2009". Orgullo in the Chavacano dialect of Zamboanga City means pride. The word is actually of Spanish origin. Orgullo de Mindanao, thus literally means Pride of Mindanao, referring to the wide array of the finest product lines up for exhibit which are crafted and produced nowhere else but in Mindanao.

According to Ms, Cuevas, this year's OMIF will be a very special one as it is timed with Zamboanga City's famous Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar celebration. It is therefore, one more reason why visitors should come to the city during its famed Fiesta Pilar.

Buyers or anyone looking for business opportunities are particularly, encouraged to come so they can see for themselves the array of new products and services to be featured during the fair.

"And while they are here", Ms. Cuevas added, "they can also participate in the 2nd Mindanao Investment Conference which will be held in the same Garden Orchid Hotel venue".

"Thus, your coming to Zamboanga would not only be to enjoy the sights and sounds of the city's grandiose fiesta celebration, you will also have the opportunity to do business on the side.", Ms. Cuevas quipped enthusiastically. "Come to Zamboanga this October so you'll know that pleasure and business do mix and are possible", Ms. Cuevas added. (DTI9/PIA9-BST) [top]
