Deadline extended for 65th Leyte Gulf Landings Anniversary photo competition

Tacloban City (October 7) -- The deadline of submission of entries for the 65th Leyte Gulf Landings Anniversary Celebration Photo Competition, spearheaded by the Department of Tourism, is extended to October 12, 2009 at 3 o'clock in the afternoon from its original date on October 9, Director Karina Rosa Tiopes said.

Director Tiopes said that the pre-judging will follow right after the cut-off time. On the 16th, a simple ribbon cutting ceremony will kick-off the launching of the week-long photo exhibit which will be open for public viewing until October 22 near the main entrance (right wing) of Robinsons Mall, Tacloban City.

All entries submitted will be presented through a slideshow courtesy of the Robinsons Appliance during the week-long exhibit, Tiopes said.

Tiopes further said that declaration and pinning of the winning entries will be on October 18 and on the 19th will be the awarding ceremony during the Liberation Fiesta Leyteña which will be held at the Department of Public Works and Highways, Candahug, Palo, Leyte. Also to took place during the Fiesta Leyteña is the awarding of the Oldest Living World War II Veteran in Eastern Visayas and the grand winners of the 65th Leyte Gulf Landings Anniversary Siday (Poetry) Contest.

Winners of the photo competition will receive the following cash prizes: 1st Prize for the three categories @ P10,000.00 per category; 2nd Prize for the three categories @ P6,000.00 per category; and 3rd Prize for the three categories @ P4,000.00 per category. All the three winners per category will also receive trophies while the seven runners-up will receive certificates, Tiopes informed.

The three categories of the said competition are: World War II Memorabilia: Photograph subjects include any World War II paraphernalia, equipment, gear, relic, keepsake, memento, articles and items; The World War II Engagement Sites… 65 years after; and Uniquely Leyte: Open Category to include landscape, still life, and portrait that showcases the uniqueness of the Province of Leyte.

On October 18-20 (at the Robinsons Mall), a mime will also be placed at the exhibit area which will also be open to the public for picture-taking courtesy of the Provincial Government of Leyte while the Camera Club of Leyte and Samar will also showcase a special photo exhibit, Tiopes said.

The Photo Contest is organized and sponsored by Department of Tourism thru the efforts of Dir. Karen Tiopes, Provincial Government of Leyte, Veterans Federation of the Philippines, Sons and Daughters Association, Inc. and the Camera Club of Leyte and Samar. (PIA-8) [top]
