Ilocos Norte celebrates National Statistics Month

By Carlo P. Canares

Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (7 October) -- The Philippine Information Agency takes the lead in the information campaign of the National Statistics Month celebration in the province of Ilocos Norte.

This year's celebration focuses on the security sector with the theme, "Enhancing Security Sector Statistics for Good Governance, Peace and Sustainable Development."

The month-long observance is held primarily to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics and at the same time ensure the support of the public in improving and enhancing the quality and standards of statistics in the country.

The celebration has also become a showcase of unity and cooperation among the members of the Philippine Statistical System and a forum for tackling issues and developments affecting the System, according to the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB).

In Ilocos Norte, government agencies, academic institutions and the private sector are participating in the month-long celebration. The provincial government under the leadership of Governor Michael Marcos Keon has lined up various activities which include a Statistics Quiz for high school and college students; a Flood Drill & Rescue Exercise as well as Fire & Earthquake Drills and lectures. There will also be a coastal clean-up drive for some barangays in the town of Paoay; and a mangrove planting activity in Pasuquin town. A symposium on prohibited drugs and responsible adolescent sexuality will be conducted for high school students; and a Job Fair will be held on October 19-20 at the Provincial Capitol by the Department of Labor & Employment.

As part of the information drive, the PIA together with DWFB-Radyo ng Bayan will be interviewing over the radio network the representatives from the National Statistics Office, Bureau of Fire Protection, Search & Rescue Squadron, Provincial Health Office, Population Commission, Provincial Social Welfare & Development Office, Department of Science & Technology, PAGASA and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

This annual event is now on its 20th year after it was first observed in 1990 pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 647 "declaring the month of October of every year as the National Statistics Month." (PIA) [top]
