DILG urges qualified persons to join Barangay Assembly Day

Tuguegarao City (8 October) -- A Synchronized Barangay Assembly Day for the second semester of the current year will be conducted in all barangays on October 17.

This semi-annual activity is pursuant to Proclamation No. 342 "Declaring the Last Saturday of March 2003 and the Third Saturday of October 2003 and Every Year Thereafter as Barangay Assembly Day."

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region 2 is encouraging all barangay residents to join in this activity to be updated on issues and concerns affecting them.

Qualified to participate in the forthcoming Barangay Assembly Day are those actual residents of a barangay for at least six (6) months; fifteen (15) years of age or over, citizens of the Philippines, and duly registered in the list of barangay assembly members.

Pursuant to Republic Act No. 7160, Section 397(b) of the Local Government Code barangays are mandated to undertake activities such as: presentation of accomplishments and first semester financial reports; discussion on problems, issues and concerns affecting the barangays particularly on solid waste management; the use of illegal drugs; and discussion on Barangay Citizen's Charter.

To get the interest of the residents to attend the barangay assembly, barangay officials are encouraged to conduct other appropriate activities.

They are also enjoined to prepare posters or banners to be posted or hanged for at least two weeks before the assembly date.

The DILG would appreciate efforts of barangay residents concerned in informing the agency, thru its regional, provincial, city or municipal office of their barangay officials' compliance or non-compliance relative to the conduct of the Barangay Assembly Day. (DILG/PIA 2) [top]
