Cooperatives urged to register anew

Tagum City (9 October) -- The Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) is calling on all cooperatives to renew their registration in compliance with the Republic Act No. 9520 or "An Act Amending the Cooperative Code of the Philippines to be Known as the Philippine Cooperative Code of 2008".

Guesting during the Kapihan sa Kapitolyo, Provincial Cooperative Coordinator Remedios Alarcon of CDA said re-registration of cooperatives is required under the law which sets deadline until March of 2010.

"They will be given new certificate by CDA," she said.

Alarcon, however, said that non-operating cooperatives can still apply for registration and all they have to do is to go the nearest district offices of CDA.

She said unregistered cooperatives will "moto propio" be without legal identity and will otherwise pursue legal recognition at the Supreme Court.

On the other hand, Provincial Cooperative Development Division chief Humber Cabunoc wanted the ranks of cooperatives in Davao del Norte be purged of fly-by-night cooperatives seen to appear only to take advantage of any opportunity to make money.

Cabunoc viewed such kind of cooperatives with no clear noble intention of economically empowering members and contributing to the local economy ought to be taken out of the list.

But Cabunoc was glad that some cooperatives of Davao del Norte had made it to the top 20 list of high performing coops in Davao Region.

In terms of total assets, nine out of 20 listed were Davao del Norte-based; six were also listed among the top performers in terms of net surplus while some also got to the top 20 in terms of volume of business.

Cabunoc is taking the lead in holding activities such as forum, symposia and tree planting that Davao del Norte is lining up in observance of the Cooperative Month this month. (PIA XI/JMDA) [top]
