Davao City (10 September) -- In a sincere gesture of concern and sympathy, the Provincial Government of Davao del Norte has appropriated P1-million as immediate financial assistance to the victims of Tropical Storm 'Ondoy'.
During its 37th Regular Session on October 5, 2009, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Davao del Norte approved SP Resolution No. 520, allowing Governor Rodolfo Del Rosario to allocate at least P1 million from the province's calamity fund as assistance to the victims of the deadly typhoon Ondoy, which have affected millions and left hundreds of Filipinos dead in the National Capital Region and its neighboring provinces.
The resolution specifically authorized Gov. Del Rosario to transfer the specified amount to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Central Office in Manila.
In an interview with the members of the media, Del Rosario said he felt sad over the hundreds of Filipinos who have died and the millions who have been affected by 'Ondoy', which caused the worst flooding in the Capital region in more than four decades.
"We in Davao del Norte are blessed to be free from typhoon so we have the moral obligation to extend a helping hand to our unfortunate countrymen, who were devastated by the recent typhoons in Luzon," he said.
The governor said the financial assistance is separate from the medicines and other relief goods donated by the province for the calamity victims.
Del Rosario turned over 15 boxes of assorted medicines, eight sacks of used clothings and three packs of used shoes to the Sonshine Philippines Movement (SPM), the charity and humanitarian arm of the Davao City-based The Kingdom of Jesus Christ, which has been accepting donations for Filipinos affected by the typhoon.
In a memorandum dated September 30, 2009, the governor appealed to the members of the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council, non-government organizations, business sectors, provincial capitol officials and employees, and to all the good people of Davao del Norte to "extend any assistance they could give to the typhoon victims in the form of food stuff, clothing or items for personal needs."
Other local government units of the province have also made the same gesture of extending help to the victims of the recent calamities in Luzon.
The City Government of Panabo is also sending P1 million cash donations to the typhoon victims in Metro Manila. The resolution for extending financial assistance was approved by the Sangguniang Panlunsod of Panabo City during its 37th Regular Session. (CIO-Tagum City) [top]
